One of my clients, a growing home builder that constructed master-planned communities in the Inland Empire, needed a way to:
- Show selection of released homes available for purchase.
- Demonstrate customizability of floor plans.
- Present in a simple way for easy communication between the sales team & customer.
My solution to this was a kiosk designed from software down to hardware in order to meet the clients needs while optimizing the available budget.
To realize this goal, the project was separated into 5 separate parts:
- Software Development
- Asset Development
- Resource Usage Testing
- Hardware design
- Cloud Deployment/maintainence/redundancy Infrastructure design
Software Development
Utilizing the blueprint system as well as diving in to c++ wherever optimization was needed (shaders), the software was designed over the course of a month and included a:
- Site Map
- Floorplan options for all models
- realtime 3D tour walkthrough of homes
Asset Development
Original assets for the Kiosk were all designed using 3ds Max, Unreal engine, and adobe creative suite.
Hardware design & Resource Usage Testing
Software was tested and optimized in unreal engine utilizing an assortment of tools for performance monitoring and resource allocation. Utilizing a benchmark machine, a custom dedicated machine for the sales office was then specced and built to maximize performance as well as cost.
At the time, large format touch screen TV’s sold as a complete package were rare and expensive so capacitive touch foil and the corresponding drivers were sourced from shenzen and manufactured here in order to lower the cost.
